Description

Glutathione is an important intracellular antioxidant that modulates reactive oxygen species (free radicals). As such, it helps to detoxify harmful substances and support immune function. It also plays a significant role in how cells communicate and synthesize proteins, particularly in muscle adaptation to athletic training. Given these functions, some researchers have suggested that increasing glutathione levels through supplementation or enhanced synthesis might boost athletic performance.

Because of these benefits, glutathione may play a role in preventing chronic diseases and supporting healthy aging. Therefore, maintaining optimal glutathione levels through diet and potentially supplementation could be beneficial for health promotion and disease prevention.

Important information and side effects

No prescription is needed for glutathione as it is a natural substance that can be obtained from the diet. However, because concentrations decrease with age, supplementation can be an effective way to boost glutathione levels.

The FDA has warned that glutathione powders used for injections may contain high levels of endotoxins, which can cause effects such as muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and low blood pressure (hypotension).

Although it is often used to increase athletic performance and to mitigate the effects of aging and chronic disease, the evidence for these uses remains inconclusive.

Side Effects

The side effects of glutathione supplementation are not well understood. Reported issues include gastric cramping, nausea, abdominal bloating, and allergic reactions. Chronic use has been associated with low serum zinc levels. Inhaled glutathione has been known to trigger asthma attacks.
