Similar to sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), is a medication commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Compared to similar drugs in the same class—phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, tadalafil differs in its chemical structure and duration of action. Tadalafil has longer-lasting effects, lasting for up to 36 hours, which is why it is often called the “weekend pill”. Additionally, it can be taken daily at a lower dose, which has been shown to be as effective as higher doses taken as needed. In fact, daily tadalafil may be more effective than on-demand use for improving long-term erectile function, particularly in men who do not respond well to intermittent dosing.
Although direct comparison studies between tadalafil and other PDE5 inhibitors are limited, research suggests that tadalafil is just as effective as other drugs in this class. It has also been shown to help some men with psychogenic ED, a condition caused by psychological factors. Unlike sildenafil, tadalafil is largely unaffected by food intake, making it more convenient for users.
