Description

Tirzepatide is a medication that combines the effects of two peptides, GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). These hormones naturally regulate appetite, blood sugar levels, and metabolism.

By activating the receptors for both GLP-1 and GIP, tirzepatide increases insulin production when blood sugar is high, reduces the liver’s glucose output, slows digestion, and promotes feelings of fullness. This novel combination makes it effective for weight loss and blood sugar control.

Important information and side effects

Tirzepatide and other drugs in this class are contraindicated during pregnancy and in those with a history of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). It is also contraindicated in those with personal or family history of thyroid cancer or a type of cancer called multiple endocrine neoplasia. If you have a history of any of these conditions, please consult your healthcare provider.

In people with diabetes taking other medications, it is important to monitor for hypoglycemia—dangerously low blood sugar levels.

Side effects

Medications like tirzepatide often cause mild gastrointestinal side effects, the most common of which is nausea. Other side effects include vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. They are most common when the medication dose is increased, but can often be managed by adjusting eating habits or slowing the rate of dose escalation.

Rare but more serious side effects have been reported, including pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, bowel obstruction, depressive symptoms, and suicidal thoughts.
